Leadership Challenge Components

Mission: To provide students with opportunities and experiences and to develop leadership skills on a personal, group, and community level. The program will develop well-rounded leaders through their engagement in FIVE leadership components:  Involvement, Service Learning, Cultural Awareness, Leadership Growth and Personal Growth.

Involvement: Involvement is an important piece of building leadership skills and style. Connecting with the campus, the community and other people will help interpersonal skills grow, while making authentic personal connections. Being active at Butler is a key to completing the Leadership Challenge.

Service Learning: Service and volunteerism is another integral part of being a leader. Helping others and participating in service activities will engage student learning and enhance students to discover many amazing things they never thought about before.

Cultural Awareness: Becoming a well-rounded person is an important characteristic of a leader. Participating in the arts, traveling, experiencing different cultures and participating in a variety of Student Life and community activities will enhance their personal and cultural growth.

Leadership Growth: This component will directly provide leadership growth and development for student leaders. It will work towards providing students with skills, theories and dialogue on how leaders lead and become who they are. Growth is demonstrated when involvement is not just affiliation, but acceptance of responsibility and accountability to an organization or community.

Personal Growth: Developing students as leaders means helping them develop leadership characteristics. What are their values? What do they believe in? This component will allow students to explore those questions and develop their leadership values and style.
